Welcome to the OptMD Consumer Education Portal

We've created this resource to provide consumers with answers to frequently asked questions pertaining to online advertising.

Why am I receiving pops?
The publishers you are visiting online sell pop-under advertising on their websites as a way to make their content available to you free of charge or at subsidized pricing. Pop-unders are an IAB (Interactive Advertising Bureau) approved ad format. Pop-under ads help pay for online content in much the same way that commercials pay for television programming. Unlike television commercials, pop-under ads are less intrusive and do not disturb your browsing experience or force you to view an ad before you can access page content. Pop-unders appear behind your web browser window and are presented to you once you have concluded your browsing experience.

Why am I receiving so many pop-unders?
Pop-under ads are sensitive to the user experience and are typically limited to one exposure, per user, per day. This limit would not be possible without the use of cookies. Cookies let a website know that you have already received a pop-under today so that another one will not be sent. If you disable cookies on your browser, publishers will no longer be able to control the number of pop-unders you receive. This may be one of the reasons you are experiencing a large quantity of pop-unders daily.

OptMD delivers less than 1% of all advertising online. We are also one of the few ad servers that labels the ads we deliver in a way that makes it easy for consumers to find and contact us. Not all ad servers or advertising networks label the ads that they deliver. If you received 100 ads today, it is likely that none of these were delivered by OptMD. If you received 200 ads today, it is likely that 1 of those ads was delivered by OptMD.

Have you installed something on my computer?
OptMD is a service that places advertising on websites through the use of cookies (a cookie is a small and completely harmless text file stored by your web browser; by default your browser is configured to allow cookies to be stored). We do not have the ability to target your computer or to put software on your computer. We cannot modify browser or program settings, nor can we install software or plug-ins (in much the same way that TV commercials cannot modify your television or channel settings). If you are seeing advertisements from OptMD, it is because you have visited a website that uses our ad delivery service as a means to generate revenue.

I want my Internet content to be ad free. How can I make that happen?
Most websites offer paid subscription models that contain fewer or, in some cases, no ads. The next time you receive a pop-under, look to see which website delivered the ad and then contact them to learn if a paid subscription model to their content is available that eliminates or reduces subscribers' exposure to ads.

The websites I visit already display banner ads that they are making money from. Why do they need to use pop-unders as well?
The web is currently experiencing a massive expansion of content every day, which is introducing a large supply of banner inventory. This has rapidly driven down the value of banner ads. Publishers can not survive on the revenue generated from banner ads alone. Pop-unders, with their wider and larger dimension, are perceived as more valuable to advertisers, and therefore help to make up the large revenue gap that has formed.

I already pay my ISP (Internet Service Provider) a monthly fee. Why should I pay websites too?
Your ISP does not share your monthly fee with the websites you visit. The fee you pay covers your cost to access local internet bandwidth. Advertising revenue is the lifeblood of the websites you frequent online. Without the cash flow generated by advertising, many of the websites you visit online could not afford to be there or to publish new content. Consider the following example: to pay for one $50,000 per year salaried employee, a website would need to deliver 10-15 million pop-under ads.

I have a pop-up blocker. Why am I still receiving these ads?
OptMD does not deliver pop-ups, only pop-unders. Pop-ups are ads which appear over top of your web browser, blocking your view of a page's content until you close them or move them away. Pop-unders are ads which appear behind your web browser. Pop-unders do not obstruct your view of the content you are actively consuming. Pop-up blockers can not always effectively block pop-unders.
